I have a reputation with some family and friends to aggressively engage in political discourse. But lately I find myself ignoring the bait of any conversation involving the triggers: liberals, conservatives, democrats or republicans.
I don't see much value in the conversation anymore, the typical outcome is an increased distance from an ideological opposite or best case scenario I get to align myself with an intellectual reflection of my own biases to outnumber my combatant.
Let's say for example If I were to leave all the political debates with "That uncle", at the holiday family gathering to the side, we would still go our separate ways with the same political ideals based on the media we filter and shaped by our own personal experiences; precisely the same as we would after 45-minutes of rage-bating. How can we expect politicians to look beyond party-lines when their constituents can't even do the same with their family, let alone strangers on the internet.
What I will *try* in place of these conversations is to speak about personal experiences (in place of rehashing partisan talking points), raise awareness to specific issues that I believe we can actively impact with our own two hands, listen to a diverse spectrum of perspectives and always strive to leave a conversation with a smile.
It sounds generic, and it may be perceived by some as the birth-cry of a defeatist, but I'm willing to accept these flaws because frankly I'm bored with my status-quo.
(Comments are turned off, think whatever you want, just smile and shake my hand when you see me just the same, thanks)
